Summer continues and with it a carefree and exciting atmosphere. Our local drive-in has reopened, the outdoor pool at our YMCA is full of energetic children, and everyone around me seems to be turning a different color - tan! This is my favorite time of the year for all these reasons. Even if you don't take a summer break, the atmosphere of those who do is contagious.

It's Vacation Time!

Travel Ideas

We have come to a wonderful part in the year where many people take vacations. Some are short, just over to Grandma's house or a nearby vacation spot; some are long cross country trips or maybe even to another country. Whether you're in the first category or the second, or maybe somewhere in the middle, don't miss out on this great opportunity for the words "fun" and "educational" to come together! Before you go on your trip make sure to grab an atlas your children can use. If you don't have one, a good resource to have is the Kid's Road Atlas. Your family can follow along on your journey and learn a few things about traveling and reading maps. Point out things such as landmarks, state parks, state boundaries, rivers, or cities as you pass them and then see if they can be found on the map. Another great idea is to time how long it takes to travel a certain distance. This helps children gain real life experience in making estimates of things like time and distance. You could introduce the idea of miles per hour and the speedometer and then see if you truly do go 60 miles in one hour.

Another valuable experience is to have your children help determine the best route to get to your destination. By taking that route they might realize the small, curvy roads take much longer than the highways. If you take a different way home, you can then talk with them about what was better about one route or the other. This develops the thinking skill of comparing and contrasting, which looks at what is the same and what is different about two things. Perhaps they will realize that they like the more scenic routes better than the highways. Either way you look at it, they're learning!

I hope everyone gets a chance to take a trip this summer. Whether it's for a couple of hours, or a couple days, it's worth it! Be sure to stay safe, and have lots of fun.

A Wiggers Family Update

Our newest addition!

I would like to inform everyone of the newest addition to the Wiggers family. On July 10th, my sister-in-law Libby was married to Kar Ho Lim! Kar Ho and Libby met at their church in Lexington. After Kar Ho gave Libby twelve pink roses last October to express his interest, everyone knew something special had happened. Kar Ho is from Malaysia, and it has been wonderful to learn more about the culture and traditions of his family. One such tradition is the tea ceremony they included at the close of the wedding. The first act the bride and groom performed as a married couple was to serve the parents tea, and then a sibling serves the bride and the groom tea. It was a beautiful expression of honor and respect. Libby looked stunning, and it was obvious that she couldn't have been happier. We are so excited to have Kar Ho as a part of our family and I know that he and Libby will have a wonderful life together!

A Word from Ashley

Fireflies

I have recently discovered one of the most amazing things about living in Kentucky -fireflies! Just the other day I was taking Mandy for a walk in the park at dusk and all around me was the most beautiful twinkling of lights. There were so many fireflies that it looked unreal, like the special effects of a movie. You might be wondering why I am so enamored with these gorgeous, little bugs; well we don't have fireflies in Florida. I was telling someone how amazing it is to live in a place with fireflies. She wisely said to me that sometimes when you grow up around something beautiful such as fireflies, you can begin to take them for granted. So if you are lucky enough to live in a place where there are fireflies, I hope you're enjoying them! And if you don't have fireflies like the many Floridians I know who read this newsletter, it's okay because you've got the beach!
