Here is a nice little resource in PDF format just right for helping young (and not-so-young!)learners put the parts of the Bible into chronological context. If you haven't used timelines before, try them. I cannot express how much they have helped in our household when it comes to understanding history and getting things sorted into the right order. If you are already someone who uses timelines in your studies, you probably know what I'm talking about.
You can print all forty-two pages contained in the pdf file, or just selected pages, and you can print as many copies as you need (for personal use), which is a boon if you have more than one child keeping a timeline book or chart.
The colorful timeline figures include people and events, with symbols to indicate if a person was a judge, prophet, or king (of Israel, Judah, or the unified kingdom). There is a timeline symbol for each book of the Bible, along with its category (law, prophetic, history, gospel, poetry, epistle); approximate dates are included where possible. You can sort the historical figures by their borders, which indicate whether the person lived or incident took place in early Biblical times (Genesis 1-11), during the history of Israel (Genesis 12-Malachi), the history of the Messiah (Matthew-John), or the early church (Acts-Revelation).
Story lines are included, which are cartoon-like progressive pictures telling some of the better-known Bible stories such as the life of Christ, Creation, Moses, Daniel, David, Jonah, Samson, Joseph, and Elijah and Elisha. You can use these to teach Bible stories and to practice skills in sequencing. Instructions are included. There are also generic figures that you can customize for your timeline.
The material is well-organized, with a table of contents, introductory material that explains the symbols used on the figures and suggestions on how to use the figures, followed by the figures themselves, wrapped up neatly with an index to make it easy to find a specific character or event. Instructions are included for a game called "Before and After" which helps learners to place Biblical characters and events in proper context.
As noted above, approximate dates are included on the figures where possible. The author admits that the dates reflect specific sources, and may not agree with the sources you are using.
All in all, this is an excellent resource that we will be using for some time to come.
